The Diversity of June

Writer: Awatif YahyaAwatif Yahya

We have made it to mid-year! The time has come for a short pause to catch our breath and celebrate achievements thus far.

June is truly a special month. Not only is it a midpoint to recognize the progress we have made in our personal goals, but also celebrating diversity in all its forms.

The month kicks off with Pride recognizing and celebrating equality for the LBGTQ+ community. Eid Al Adha fell on June 16th, 2024, where 1.9 billion Muslims worldwide commemorate Prophet Ibrahim’s faith test (find out more here). We also honor Juneteenth in support of race struggles of the black community.

In the US, June marks additional celebrations. Flag Day, commemorating the adoption of the United States flag, falls on June 14th and Father’s Day on June 16th. This makes June a diversity month from an identify front, to religious, race and family.

For this month, and for the sake of embracing diversity, we offer ten leadership suggestions to help build bridges and get closer to our colleagues, friends and family:

1. Choose curiosity (over debate) in your conversations with others

2. Be respectful … always, no matter how the other party conduct themselves

3. Give every person an equal opportunity to speak and be heard

4. Appreciate every person for the individual they choose to be

5. Do not judge others for their feelings, thoughts and/or beliefs

6. Do not embarrass, criticize or shame anyone for their thoughts and/or beliefs

7. Encourage and thank people for sharing openly and honestly

8. Demonstrate humility and grace

9. Never resort to assuming malice firsthand

10. Build-up rapport and trust

We hope these tips help you build stronger relationships in your communities and elevate your leadership skills.
